Los Angeles, début des années 1990. Alors qu'il rentre chez lui à la nuit tombée, l'avocat Mack Davis tombe en panne de voiture dans un quartier mal famé. Menacé par des inconnus, il ne doit son salut qu'à l'intervention de Simon, un mécanicien afro-américain. Entre ces deux hommes que tout sépare, à commencer par leur milieu social, se noue une profonde amitié. Mack décide de venir en aide à la soeur de Simon, qui habite un ghetto insalubre.
